Armenian Genocide Movie ‘The Promise’ (2017)
Quote:
The professional movie critics are already skewering the film with their computer keyboards; I haven't seen it yet but as with the recent film about the Ukrainian Genocide, "Bitter Harvest", I expect more comparisons to a David Lean film from 52 years ago or complaints that the budget used to make the movie wasn't as big as Spielberg's. "The Promise" opens tomorrow at theaters in the United States.

Re: Armenian Genocide Movie ‘The Promise’ (2017)
From the previews I can see it will definitely not have wide appeal.
Many people probably could not find Armenia on a map and don't know
anything about the
Armenian genocide.

According to Gavin McInnes, it was "the young turks".

It got a very favorable review on deadline.com
Also, all the proceeds (not just opening weekend but permanently) are being donated to charity. I don't know if that's for tax write-off reasons or altruistic reasons, but I think I'll check it out this weekend. It looks like a worthwhile movie. Most people can't find Syria on a map, either. Or Granada. Or Nicaragua. What does that have do with the movie's any good? |

However, it will probably not have wide appeal because most people know very little about Armenia or the genocide. Christian Bale might draw some people to the movie because he is a good actor. That is interesting all proceeds are going to charity.

Re: Armenian Genocide Movie ‘The Promise’ (2017)
Excellent movie. Unlike "Allied" (which was basically "Casablanca" with
f-bombs), "The Promise" really is an historical drama more on par with
an "Exodus" (the Paul Newman movie) and a "Reds" (the Warren Beatty
movie), which are two of my all-time favorites. So, naturally, I really
liked "The Promise." A lot. And I hope it shows up on the year-end Best
Of's.
Unusually restrained for a PG-13 movie, the Catholic News Service gave it a mostly favorable review with "A-III -- Adults" classification: "Remarkable courage, perseverance and their unwavering Christian faith sustain the victims against all odds. "Our revenge will be to survive," Ana tells Michael. Despite the warnings below, given its potential to raise awareness of a historical tragedy -- one that the Turkish government, to this day, has never acknowledged -- "The Promise" is probably acceptable for mature adolescents." http://www.catholicnews.com/services...he-promise.cfm |

Has our government acknowledged the genocide?

On behalf of the U.S. Senate: sadly, no.
On behalf of individual states: currently, 45 of 50 (props to Wyoming, the latest) http://armenianweekly.com/2017/04/21...nian-genocide/ Here's the state by state breakdown: https://anca.org/us-genocide-recognition/ |
