This UNESCO does a lot of good in the world.
Why would anyone want to cut their funding?
UNESCO helps educate needy children throughout the Third World, trains teachers, promotes anti- terrorism and tolerance through education, and fights the spread of AIDS through education, is trying to cut in half the number of people who lack access to drinking water by 2015, encourages the use of renewable energies in the Third World, has a tsunami warning center in the Pacific, maintains scientifc biospheres throughout the world, promotes and protects cultural diversity and over 800 World Heritage Sites.
UNESCO protects museums and trys to prevent illicit art trafficking.
To whom much is given, much is required.

Apparently, in one deal or another made years ago, congress made a law about the UN agencies. If one of them went forward & recognised Palestine as a state on their own, all US funds for that organization cease immediately. It amounts to about a quarter of their budget.
So in answer, we all do by default.

Does UNESCO realize they are trying to legitimize a terrorist state. That right there is enough of a reason.

OK...so UNESCO does all these "good" things. The UN is still run by a bunch of third world "POO-BAHS" who are living the high life on the backs of their citizens, AND US. How about these OWS freaks go over to the UN HQ and protest there for a while. I say, invoke the "Golden Rule". That is, "Them that has the gold, makes the rules." That would be us.
I have a couple of suggestions:
1) First, and foremost, have the UN move to Delhi or Lagos or, better still, Mexico City.
2) Each country gets 1 vote for every $1 million it gives to the UN. Let's see how the "POO-BAHs" like that.

I take a different direction here ....I am tired of the stalling of the peace process there involving the Israelis and the Palestinians...just how long does it take...we are in to the -what- 40th+ year...if I were a Palestinian...I would go elsewhere for recognition....they live like prisoners surrounded by guards/posts...even their air and water totally controlled, land confiscated by the Israelis settlements even as the faux peace process was supposedly ongoing.......if our longstanding agreement with Unesco says if they recognize Palestine as it's own state that loses our funds...well so be it...but I surely can understand and empathize with all sides...

How are we putting America first supporting a terrorist state?

VERY INTERESTING................I just read a piece about a Palistine never accepting recognition of a Jewish state.
I wonder what out good friends in UNESCO have to say about that issue?
Don't put it to role call.................Isreal will lose.

......as with any negotiations..there is much more to it...there are factions on both sides attempting to sabatoge the peace process...ie the continual building of settlements and as you mentioned some factions not able to recognize Isreal...but that shouldn't stop the process...40+ years is enough and many of us sympathic to both side are losing patience...our funds going to Israel is huge and minimal to the Palestinians...time for our nation to reassess...what has been done in the past is not working...
