USA pulls all funding from UNESCO over Pali vote

US cuts funding for UNESCO after Palestinian vote
The Obama administration is cutting off funding for the U.N. cultural agency because it approved a Palestinian bid for full membership. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland says Monday's vote triggers a long-standing congressional restriction on funding to U.N. bodies that recognize Palestine as a state before an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal is reached.
Nuland says UNESCO's decision was "regrettable, premature and undermines our shared goal to a comprehensive, just and lasting peace" between Israelis and Palestinians.
She says the U.S. would refrain from making a $60 million payment it planned to make in November.
But Nuland said the U.S. would maintain membership in the body.
Legislation dating from 1990 and 1994 mandates a complete cutoff of American financing to any United Nations agency that accepts the Palestinians as a full member. State Department lawyers judged that there was no leeway in the legislation, and no possibility of a waiver, so the United States contribution for 2011 and future years will not be paid.
The step will cost the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization one-quarter of its yearly budget — the 22 percent contributed by the United States (about $70 million) plus another 3 percent contributed by Israel.
Let them eat cake?
I think we need to let others pay out to a lot of these funds for a few years. Austerity for a little while at least?

I do, and I am sure there are others. Would Israel be in limbo now if their interests were defended? Obama undermines them constantly.

OK... the money is channeled through the US Dept. of State but he (Obama) didn't have a choice on this one unless he wanted to violate the law as written.
If successful, the bid would force the Obama administration to cut funding to the agency.
Public Law 101-246, passed by the Democratic-controlled Congress in 1990, states that "no funds authorized to be appropriated by this Act or any other Act shall be available for the United Nations or any specialized agency thereof which accords the Palestine Liberation Organization the same standing as member states."
Public Law 103-236 Title IV, passed in 1994, prohibits "voluntary or assessed contribution to any affiliated organization of the United Nations which grants full membership as a state to any organization or group that does not have the internationally recognized attributes of statehood."
UNESCO receives 22 percent of its operating budget from the United States, about $80 million a year, according to CNS News.

They violate the law with each and every penny sent to Israel. It's illegal for us to send money to a country that has a nuclear capability and is not inspected by IAEA under the Symington Amendment. But we still do.
"The Symington Amendment is legislation introduced by Stuart Symington, a Democratic senator from Missouri, authored to strengthen the US position on nuclear non-proliferation.
The Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 was amended by the Symington Amendment (Section 669 of the FAA) in 1976. It banned U.S. economic, and military assistance, and export credits to countries that deliver or receive, acquire or transfer nuclear enrichment technology when they do not comply with IAEA regulations and inspections. "

The United Nations has been a left wing bastion for many years. They vote against the interests of the United States and Israel all the time. I don’t know what you can do to turn its mindset around.
If we shut the building down and sent everybody back home, I don’t think the cause for world peace would notice.

So your post is all warm and cushy, but why is it that We tax paying Americans have to support 22% of the program? Let the one who voted to allow people who are not even a country become members of their little click. Do you think the palistinians will contribute monetarily to the fund? I think not. They live on handouts from the U.S. and other countries who think welfare is better for nation building than thepeople of that nation working for it. If it weren't for the world handing palistine free money they would have been dispersed into other terrorist countries long ago. Best to let nature take its course rather than change people who are destined to never work for what they have.

Israel pulls 2 Million from UNESCO (Thurs)
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday ordered a halt to Israel's financial contributions to UNESCO after the UN cultural organisation granted the Palestinians full membership.
Netanyahu "ordered that Israel's $2 million-per-annum participation in the budget of UNESCO be frozen, following the organisation's decision to accept the Palestinian Authority into its ranks," the premier's office said.
"The prime minister ordered that the budget be directed to cooperative initiatives towards the same goals in the region."
The decision came three days after UNESCO voted to admit the Palestinians as a full member, over opposition from the United States and Israel.
"Such steps will not advance peace; they will only push it further away," Netanyahu said on Thursday.

Canada cuts funding for UNESCO
Canada is joining the U.S. in cutting off funding for the U.N. cultural agency UNESCO because it approved a Palestinian bid for full membership.
Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said Tuesday the decision is not in the best interests of peace in the Middle East, so Canada is freezing all future voluntary contributions to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
Canada contributes about $10 million a year to the agency.
The United States has also announced it will pull its $60 million in funding from UNESCO, which depends heavily on American funding.
One would have to wonder, with out current financial woes, why does the US Department of State have record high funding to the US agencies in the FIRST PLACE?
Hillary asked for it.
Your congress approved it.
Yes, I have a copy of the budgets here.
But! I digress from the story line. UNESCO has been hurt. Now they plan to apply to 15-16 other agencies including the IAEA.
Not cool that - what with Syria's possibly hiding nukes & Iran actively working on obtaining them...

Next, the Palestinians aim to join 15 more “specialized agencies” at the UN, including obscure bodies like the Universal Postal Union, which most Americans have never heard of or ever imagined they were paying to prop up. The agencies also include the nuclear watchdog IAEA and the World Health Organization, which has the State Department sweating.
The US ambassador to UNESCO pledged to “continue our efforts to find ways to support” the agency, and the State Department is eyeing its “options” -- meaning it’s looking for ways to flout a clear legal mandate.
But that’s a fool’s errand; if UNESCO is so eager to give up its honeypot, that’s all to the good. Withholding funds from just a few of the 16 agencies the Palestinians want to join could save taxpayers over $1 billion, according to White House figures.
And why stop there?
Better to speed up the process and defund all of Turtle Bay, where US dollars are burned by the barrel.
In fiscal year 2010, the US pumped an unbelievable $7.7 billion into the UN and its many agencies, up $1.3 billion -- 20 percent -- from just a year before, when US funding had already reached a record high.

the un is recognizing the "palestine" because "the whole world supports them". of course, while the "whole world" is busy supporting palestine, the USA is the main financial backer of the corrupt UN . perhaps it is now time to let the "whole world" also support the UN financially. lots of countries have great ideas (?) and wild plans, but offer little or no financial support.

hopefully our world leader president will not find a way to circumvent the law which bars sending our treasure to the UN agenciea under these circumstances. not only the particular UN agency described, but also the other 16 UN agencies for which palestine is seeking membership in. the possibility for savings is huge.

When they were getting their butts kicked by Israel they asked the U.S. to stand up as the only remaining super power and we put marines in between the two warring parties. Every since they have treated the U.S. as an enemy.

I thought the subject was uSA pulling funds over Pali vote?
I didn't know the topic was the born or unborn. But if it is, does that include palestinians or exclude them as well?
I didn't know UNESCO had a Untited Nations vote?
But I do know that Israel signed an agreement that would lead to Palestinian Statehood decades ago.
The nazis systematically erased 6 million jews during WWWII as a part of a mass eradication...you would think after having been moved, removed, robbed, pillaged, raped and murdered, Jews in Israel would not pass the same fate unto palestinians who were occupying Palestine for the past almost 2000 years.
Why would Unesco have to be punished only to want to consumate an agreement Jews made for palestinians to have their own state then?
he problem is that Jews didn't realize the population growth in israel from then to now and more of this problem has to do with Israel's need for more land than it has to do with religion, or a single rocket from a disgruntled palestinian or even money.
After all, Israel has at least 150 nukes, an air force, navy, anti-missile program paid by US taxpayers, and an army, elite commandos what would a palestinian state do against Israel any more than what is going on now?
I forgot to mention, this illustrates that Israel has every politician in the USA that wants to win an election at their beckon, and even our government whose first responsibility is to the security of us as well.
Our government should be behind a palestinian state and final resolution of this quarrel which also is a seeding area for so many other fringe isalmic groups that can be sympathetic with palestinians as long as this agreement is not kept by Israel.

Our government should be behind a palestinian state and final resolution of this quarrel which also is a seeding area for so many other fringe isalmic groups that can be sympathetic with palestinians as long as this agreement is not kept by Israel.

Do you really think it is wise to appease islam again, because to the Palestinians and other mideast countries, that is what its all about. Western civilization is in this picture, whether you want to admit it or not.
