Holland has been ranked third on a United Nations list of the best countries to live in. The UN Human Development Index put Norway and Australia ahead of the Dutch on the 187-country list which assesses long-term progress in healthcare, education, child welfare, literacy, annual income and life expectancy.

The Democratic Republic of Congo was last on the list, while Zimbabwe – last year’s worst country to live in – moved up to 173rd place.

The UN development programme (UNDP) criticised wealthier nations for backtracking on their commitment to alleviate poverty in developing countries. The problems arising from environmental issues worldwide need acute attention, the UNDP added.

Each year since 1990 the Human Development Report has published the Human Development Index (HDI) which was introduced as an alternative to conventional measures of national development, such as level of income and the rate of economic growth. The HDI represents a push for a broader definition of well-being and provides a composite measure of three basic dimensions of human development: health, education and income. United States's HDI is 0.910, which gives the country a rank of 4 out of 187 countries with comparable data.

The HDI of OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) as a region increased from 0.749 in 1980 to 0.873 today, placing United States above the regional average.

The U.S. ranked 4th /187 worldwide:

I love the Netherlands ! The people are so nice and real.

If it wasn't  so cold weather wise I'd live there!  But it's a great place to visit and the people are honestly beautiful just all around.

The U.S. Could have fared better on this list but if only we had more time off and some kind of nationalized way of ensuring that everyone had access to healthcare. We were so drunk on shipping profits to the top that we forgot that the rest of us would pay the price. When 42% of the nation's wealth belongs to one percent of the population and those people are looking at capital gains at 17% while the rest of us are balancing between all that we pay in taxes vs all that is taken for personal bills... We're paying double in taxes and living on the back of the bus. Many of us are so indoctrinated with a false sense of national pride that we're standing up on soap boxes volunteering our neighbors to die without healthcare or to be tossed into the streets because we were lucky enough not to be laid off yet while that neighbor was pushed into poverty.

There is a reason why the 99ers are gaining momentum. They see it. They understand. The folks on the top jumped the shark and America is beginning that period of adjustment that will rebalance the playing field. We've done better in the past and can do it again.

We don't have a budget crisis... We have a jobs crisis.

"You cannot negotiate with people who say 'what's mine is mine, and what's yours is negotiable." -- President John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

Those are all nanny states overun by immigrants.  Their native cultures are being replaced.  Is it any wonder the UN likes it?
Crime rates have sky rocketed in Norway and Sweden, committed  by so called people of eastern origin.  What a bunch of crap. Both those countries are rape capitals of Europe.

I believe the first post by the OP said Sweden before it was edited.  But Australia also has a problem with elements who refuse to assimilate.  The nanny state part, they are on their way.

Well they have other perks.  They can be mugged or gang raped by immigrants, who they support, or walk into a bunch of people prostrated in the middle of a street.  Europe is going down the tubes and the UN knows it, and relishes that fact.

Would it be different if they were mugged by citizens? Immigrants are in Europe, because Europe needs them.  The same as we do. Our population is aging, and the workforce needs youth. Those that say ship all illegals home dont realize they would rip 15% of GDP right out of the economy. The hate of immigrants is nothing new, in fact hitler capitalized the most on the feeling of hating people that are different. Multi culturism is a bad word for some, but they are living in a hole. I dont care who you are, the hollidays you celebrate, and the traditions you have come from many cultures. Humans are nomads and have been intermingling since we have stood upright.

Who wouldn't have a problem with immigrants like that?  They do not assimilate.  Most contribute nothing to the host society. And terrorize and intimidate the native citizens

Proves what I have been saying for years. Look a Europe for better standards to improve peoples lives.

The EU is in trouble thanks to the Jerkwads in the USA Financial System, EU people did the same insane things.

Then Asia followed us. See what happens you go with Deregulation on Wall Street and Banks, you get corruption and a crash every time. For those idiots that say "the markets corrects itself", welcome to the correction, are you happy now?

I think a stable economy is one heck of a lot better then this insane rollercoaster.

That has to be one of the most uninformed view of Europe I have ever seen.

You need to watch Nova and PBS more. Or here is one read Scientific American or American Scientist.

I read things from people that study problems, not goofy blogs from political hacks that live in mom basement.

You can find that the EU saw what the Wall Street was doing then shortly EU followed suit. (Banks overlending)

Jeez how about you read and watch some info and get off the Right Wing Blogs that say the Poor made this mess.

Obama has in office the same clowns that created this economic mess and no one went to jail.

The Netherlands is a great place and the Dutch are a wonderful people. They are the tallest national group in the world and Dutch women are fantastic. As a people they are friendly, direct in their comments (don't expect sugar coating), non-judgmental, outgoing and fun to associate with. They are very industrious and their co-ed saunas may be one of the very best things about this great little nation.

Wow.  I can't be;ieve I have been comapred to Hilter yet again.  Funny how when you have different views from the left they have no argument and revert to name calling.  Just because I am not tolerant of someone who breaks the law.  Notimpressedbyyou, I am not impressed by you.  Continue with your rant, that's all it is and it holds no water.
