It begs the old question..

Roses on a Piano, or Tulips on an Organ?

Especially when the tulips are so beautiful.

vf...The Netherlands in a small nation but like every other, it has distinct regions....Himself and I have been more than once.  Amsterdam is NOT to be missed....too much to mention...the canals, Anne Frank house, the Reichs Museum (could not leave the Rembrant, Jan Hals etc. etc.  area.  Too stunning for words.)  The coffee houses.  The "straight up" ;houses that they use cranes to move furniture to the upper floors. When you go, do not miss a "cruise" on the canals"...but Amsterdam is only a part of The Netherlands (and the nation is "The Netherlands" not just Holland !  Flud, the Dutch brother, has hammered that home !)
Someone said to me that it is like Mickey and Minnie live there...lace curtains at the windows !  Some areas (many) the sidewalks are scrubbed every am !  But Friesland , the area, that I spoke of...well, it a whole other "place" !
Flud and Corie are coming to us in the spring....I mentioned that Flud wants to see, experience (as much as one can) the Navaho country.  He, and Corie, recognize that we, the wonderful USA, has cultures galore to be "gathered" as an experience if only briefly.  Flud, the Dutch brother, LOVES the USA....and so appreciates who and what we are...and is happy to celebrate US!
For me, it doesn't get much better than that. We each can appreciate and celebrate the other !
Only thing I regret, is that a wonderful personal tour in Leewarden, Freisland that I missed the part re: Hugueonot church as I have French protestant ancestory who came to Netherlands from France and hence to NY.
I think the most unforgettable moment in that small city was the Jewish school where there were several hundred students who left one day....and none ever returned.
I do understand how this country (once a "world power" on the seas, is one of the "most highly ranked country in which to live....For this lifetime, I am "staying home" in the wonderful USA....but if I had a chance at a second life, well !
Enough from eberd ! (Thank heavens ! Oops.  Can I say that ????)

i just thought that I can have left the impression that "Flud", the Dutch brother is a first time visitor to the US.  Oh, no.  He, Flud, from The Netherlands, has been to the US many, many times...from the NE to NW,from the SE to the SW. And lived here not a few years.  Oh, yes, he "knows" us and yes, he loves US.  Just to correct any impression that he was a "first time" visitor.!!  Thanks all!

Well they have other perks.  They can be mugged or gang raped by immigrants, who they support, or walk into a bunch of people prostrated in the middle of a street.  Europe is going down the tubes and the UN knows it, and relishes that fact.

I like to learn new things.  I would enjoy reading any links you could provide about people in Holland being "mugged or gang raped by immigrants".

Holland has a great, realistic approach towards life as does Australia.  Haven't been to Norway yet but look forward to it one day.

The UN Human Development Index put Norway and Australia ahead of the Dutch on the 187-country list which assesses long-term progress in healthcare, education, child welfare, literacy, annual income and life expectancy.

The Democratic Republic of Congo was last on the list, while Zimbabwe – last year’s worst country to live in – moved up to 173rd place.

The UN development programme (UNDP) criticised wealthier nations for backtracking on their commitment to alleviate poverty in developing countries. The problems arising from environmental issues worldwide need acute attention, the UNDP added.

Each year since 1990 the Human Development Report has published the Human Development Index (HDI) which was introduced as an alternative to conventional measures of national development, such as level of income and the rate of economic growth. The HDI represents a push for a broader definition of well-being and provides a composite measure of three basic dimensions of human development: health, education and income. United States's HDI is 0.910, which gives the country a rank of 4 out of 187 countries with comparable data.

The HDI of OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) as a region increased from 0.749 in 1980 to 0.873 today, placing United States above the regional average.

The U.S. ranked 4th /187 worldwide:

Yes, it is indeed a thoughtful, progressive nation.  I find the people to be frank without being "brutal" in their honesty.  Warm and welcoming.  Most we met spoke very good English which was a relief as I ...we...speak no Dutch !  (Now that is a difficult language !  And Frisian...well another tongue twister.   I have read that if you went into a coffee house in Friesland, you, as an  English speaker, could grasp some of the more simple conversations (like "how's the weather" type comment)...I did not find that to be true for me !  And yeppers, they do like their wine and in that we were in total agreement !
It's fun for me to chat about these trips to The Netherlands....for like you, they bring back some amazing memories !
Be well, girl.  You do bring a joy to most of us here.  Peace be with you.

English, yes, very well for that fact...I had a husband and wife tell me English is or was, then, a required language...Strange when they are already speaking 2-3 depending where they lived...Just as you point out about Frisian..I would go back in a heart beat...

Sounds so wonderful eberd!  I've seen the "Netherlands" on R. Steve's Europe (LOL, I LOVE the travel shows!  I find other cultures just fascinating!), and all I can say is absolutely gorgeous!  Reminds me of a fairy tale land!

Hardly. Notice the article supports a EU report findings.

The Muslim link to the rape epidemic was already evident several years ago. In July 2005, a study from the Swedish Crime Prevention Council, Brå, revealed that rapists in that country were four times more likely to be foreign born.
