Western Black Rhino Now Extinct
11-13-2011 10:37 AM
No wild black rhinos remain in West Africa, according to the latest global assessment of threatened species.
The Red List, drawn up by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), has declared the subspecies extinct.
A subspecies of white rhino in central Africa is also listed as possibly extinct, the organisation says.
The annual update of the Red List now records more threatened species than ever before.
The IUCN reports that despite conservation efforts, 25% of the world's mammals are at risk of extinction. As part of its latest work it has reassessed several rhinoceros groups.

The balance of nature? Nature has nothing to do with many of the extinctions. They now cut off Rhino horns and Elephant tusks to deter pouchers in an attempt to preserve the species.
The tiger has magical powers for some cultures and it's threatened as well.
True....some parts of this planet is being overrun if for nothing more than human basic needs. Everything has a value and that is often determined by it's own worth. Can it be eaten or sold.
Seven billion of us running around.................most are scavangers living day to day with little concern for tomorrow. With life in the BALANCE.............survival of the fittest prevails. Sucks to be primitive as viewed by Western Cultures. Anyone for cannibalism?

Just for fun. What say you about the FLOOD of white Rhinos devouring the land ? There are so many you could have steak dinner every night for the rest of your life. Nobody talks about the Balance of nature when there are too dam many. Let's get a huntin PARTY together and Balance this CARP!

Please note: there are Black Rhinos in Zoos and research stations in Africa (not a lot though) should there prove to be some essential need for them, within 20 years there could be several small heards.

I see several people has to get their snide comment in like it is no big deal and something to laugh about. By the way the Neanderthal is not extinct, DNA is intermixed with human DNA:

The sadness of human stupidity believing Rhino horn is an aphrodisiac.Sadness of human encroachment on nature due to human overpopulation.
What a magnificent creature. Maybe some scientist has some W.B.Rhino DNA in a lab somewhere, one can hope.

Not laughing at all. By the way Black Rhino DNA is intermixed with White Rhino DNA and probably some dinosaur DNA. So not to worry.

This looms as another shining example of capitalism at work. Obviously capitalism doesn't think... It merely feeds on everything it touches till there is nothing left.

Outlaw capitalism now...
Send some money to Al Gore - maybe he can tell us how to save the Rhino.
Millions and millions of species are counting on you...
Vote communist - it's good for the planet.
Acid rains completely killed many forests in Krušné hory, the mountains near the border with Germany. Some diseases were linked to the very bad environmental situation and the life expectancy was significantly lower

U.S. industry is often painted as the chief villain by conservationists, but pollution is hardly unique to capitalist nations. It is often worse in Communist countries,

LOL So cruel.. So mean... I'm wounded to the core. LOL You need to pay closer attention to my posts. I'm quite consistent. I am an ardent capitalist who knows that without some guidelines, capitalism doesn't work. It eats itself and deals out unwarranted copious amounts of cruelty. That cruelty is most manifest in things like widespread austerity and wealth so powerful that it warps the rules of the game as it goes. We were weaned on the protestant work ethic, supply & demand theory, and Elizabethan poor laws. Somewhere along the way we opened the doors to a global economy which has laid waste to domestic businesses and drained the air out of our economic tank. I love businesses. I love competition. Unchecked greed and unchecked capitalism doesn't have anything to do with competition. It circumvents competition. Our multinational corporations are subverting our government, crushing the American dream, and outsourcing profits. In the process, it has subjected the United States to the worst breach of national security in our history. We can't afford to feed ourselves anymore (no longer able to generate the revenues to run the country) and we can't make the vast majority of the products we need to function on a day to day basis. You want rockets for defense? We don't do ICC chips anymore. You want automobiles? We don't do chips for those either. You want to buy a television? Nope... You'll have to go somewhere else. That ought to come out in the wash but we're waiting for washers and driers to be imported, too.

HA
We're helpless little panty wastes that can't seem to do anything for ourselves at all anymore. Where we once lead as an industrial giant... We're now a bloated slothful toad... A carbuncle on the a** of progress. Ironically, it isn't because the people got lazy. They were pushed out of jobs that were shipped to toxic sweat shops all around the globe. The president's council on jobs is stuffed with guys who like to begin their speeches with, "Those stupid people out there who think that jobs are ever coming back to this country are dumber than bricks. Those jobs are gone and they aren't ever coming back." Wrong! The reason those jobs are gone is because we dropped import tariffs from the 20% they were during the beginning of the Reagan era to the paltry 4.5% they are now. To further paint us in a corner, our corporate shills (elected officials) have been willing to sign any kind of Free Trade Agreement that came down the pike. We've been sold out.
Wages = Demand. When sales waned under this bogus supply-side crap, they set out to loan us the money to buy the things we couldn't afford to buy with the wages they were willing to pay us. They engineered a non-sustainable credit economy. We don't have a budget problem... We have a JOBS crisis.
Zero hypocrisy here. Sound economic theory using empirical facts. Look around. The incestuous relationship between the government and big businesses has created the mess we're in. In doing so, they've let Wall Street run naked through the streets blowing our investments and hanging their failures around our necks... Socialized debts. My belief in America can be found in small towns an individual proprietorships. When the economy is balanced, verdant businesses can hedge their way in with a little innovation and a whole lot of sweat. When the economy is polarized like it is, small town squares dry up, mini-malls look like ghost towns, new ideas can't get financed, and unemployment runs rampant.
Have you bothered to read any of my posts along the way? If you had, you'd know that I am for a balanced economy. I support competition and a strong domestic economy. I support a strong middle class. I support supply and demand principles as long as the shopkeeper doesn't have his thumb on the scales.
When capitolism is allowed to run rampant, the most greedy folks gravitate to the top. Unchecked greed is a good foundation for a dodgy moral compass.
"Capitalism is the astounding belief that the most wickedest of men will do the most wickedest of things for the greatest good of everyone." John Maynard Keynes.
