Maybe the OWS crowd should take a look:  We are 4 out of 187, ranked ahead of virtually all of the European socialist utopias.   Of course we can never compete with tiny homogeneous nations like Holland and Australia.  I guess things aren't quite as bad here as some people think!!

My husband has a "Dutch" brother (yes, they are as close as brothers).  He and his wife moved from near Amsterdam to Friesland several years ago....(he was formerly a prof at U. of Amsterdam).  We were there 3 years ago...and I have to say, that if there is indeed reincarnation, please let me go to Friesland !  (I do love my country...the USA...and would defend it to the death !  I am here speaking of another life !).  This quiet corner of The Netherlands, so old, with its own language, customs, and a unique and vibrant way of life. The people are very direct without being obnoxious, warm and interesting and interested in so many other cultures and lands.  The quiet villages with local green grocers, bakeries, fish markets.  the quiet lanes that curve past the dairy farms; the folks on bicycles of all ages and waving to any and all.. (Maybe I should go to work for their version of Chamber of Commerce !!! Don't really believe they need or want that service, or me for that matter as I do not speak Frisian!)
Himself and I have often spoken of their "way of life" and how it differs from ours....pluses and minuses for both.  But I do love The Netherlands and I do love Freisland...but this heart of mine loves the good old USA!!!
Peace be with you.

Maybe Friesland has all those things because they NEED them. Do the people there do everything locally? When my son was in Germany, he said that if you wanted to build a house, you could clear only enough land at the edge of town for your house, and no more. You were NOT going to go 10 kilometers out in the country and clear 100 acres for a subdivision. If you keep everything compact, a local community can support all those businesses.  Plus, at $6-8  a galloon for gas, do you really want to go 20 miles to a mall? Most of those towns being old, where would you even park? In Detroit in the 1950's there were all those local shops. There was a grocer every couple of blocks. But you need a community to support the shops. Most of them are vacant now.

Rich...I declare that what I wrote is true, all true !  But you know what?  The "Dutch brother" and Corie are coming here (have been to our dear "young" (to them !) USA, many times and they would tell us all what is so good about us...it is always good for "himself' and I to be reminded ! And for us (himself and I !) to remember that small, wonderful, compassionate country of The Netherlands  has provided a "haven" to so many (including some of my ancestors) !  Oh, yes.  They will be here in April....and guess what they want to see indepth (that they have not seen before) is....Code Talker land....the Navajo Nation.  Now, ain't that grand ???  The Dutch "brother" would be the first to remind us.....theirs is a small nation.  Ours is a large nation. The solutions for one do not necessarily translate into a solution for the other.
Peace be with you, rich...indeed to us all.  eberd.

yogurt...I do so agree with you !  Perhaps Freisland is sorta, kinda  like some of our communities once were.  I can see the "perhaps so"....maybe some of my attachment is for the "what was" or "what was thought to be" is reflected in my love and admiration for Friesland.  It really is in todays world a wonderful, lovely and....liveable...place. I like your post....a great deal. Thank you.
Peace be with you, yogurt.PS The Govt. regs in Europe are far more stringent than any we have conjured !  (Good and Bad??? Would not suit most of us...yes, me too !)

OH but I have been there 2Johns.  Australia and the Netherlands combined have a population roughly equivalent to California.  By American standards tiny indeed.  I'm speaking of population of course, not geographical territory.

Would it be different if they were mugged by citizens? Immigrants are in Europe, because Europe needs them.  The same as we do. Our population is aging, and the workforce needs youth. Those that say ship all illegals home dont realize they would rip 15% of GDP right out of the economy. The hate of immigrants is nothing new, in fact hitler capitalized the most on the feeling of hating people that are different. Multi culturism is a bad word for some, but they are living in a hole. I dont care who you are, the hollidays you celebrate, and the traditions you have come from many cultures. Humans are nomads and have been intermingling since we have stood upright.

Get real . . . . at least they can walk their streets without getting shot in a drug war crossfire ! ! ! !

You know . .not like our high # of collateral damage killings we accept as "all in a days work" in this country . . . .

Well they have other perks.  They can be mugged or gang raped by immigrants, who they support, or walk into a bunch of people prostrated in the middle of a street.  Europe is going down the tubes and the UN knows it, and relishes that fact.

On topic, Holland is a great country to spend time in as are a number of other Euro countries. Backpacking Europe used to be the alternative to going straight to college after high school graduation back in the day.

Thank you vfm....Holland, Netherlands, etc. does have some wonderful "old" history and beautiful old building etc.Yet, I found the people extremely polite and progressive in their idea's and way of living..Stability of their country, at least when I was there 2002 was also rather obvious...

Is that like you bringing them(Muslims) into the Jon Stuart thread?  Have you heard of Geert Wilders?  He hails from that area.  And he doesn't describe things over there as a bed of roses.  It is a propaganda move to promote the multi-culturism that is a extreme fail.

When 42% of the nation's wealth belongs to one percent of the population and those people are looking at capital gains at 17% while the rest of us are balancing between all that we pay in taxes vs all that is taken for personal bills... We're paying double in taxes and living on the back of the bus. Many of us are so indoctrinated with a false sense of national pride that we're standing up on soap boxes volunteering our neighbors to die without healthcare or to be tossed into the streets because we were lucky enough not to be laid off yet while that neighbor was pushed into poverty.

There is a reason why the 99ers are gaining momentum. They see it. They understand. The folks on the top jumped the shark and America is beginning that period of adjustment that will rebalance the playing field. We've done better in the past and can do it again.

We didn't win, apparently, because we're a bunch of jealous whiners.  I'll take the US over Holland Anyday
