Re: EWTN TV: Bilbo's Journey: A Catholic Travel Guide To The Hobbit 8/30: 10PM EST
A point rarely touched on with Tolkien is that he was not born into a
Catholic family and it was his mother converting (to the horror of many
of her relatives, most of whom disowned her) that led to Tolkien
becoming eventually a Catholic author many of us recognize. At some
point I'd love to see a documentary focus on his mother's conversion and
the effects that had on both he and his brothers and the struggles they
all went through as a result. Especially as Tolkien like myself lost a
parent early on in his life and I was aware of that reading him in my
teens and identified with the melancholic strain that is apparent in
much of his work, however he never lets it turn into self-pity or
overwhelm his literary output.
