And let perpetual light shine upon her.
May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed
Through the mercy of God,
Rest in peace.

She was a great advocate for unborn children.

I did not agree with everything she said, but she was a devout prolife Catholic who put her beliefs into action.

My late mother knew her many years ago, when they were both involved in the early days of the pro-life movement. She was a dedicated advocate for unborn children. RIP

This made me angry when I first saw it.

At my age and with the size of the font, I thought the word Icon was loon for a second.

As it is, it'd be a sad moment, but when good people die - not too sad.

I differed with Phyllis durning the primaries with her support of Trump -- but I must admit, she had enough cred with me over the years to have me reconsider if Trump were perhaps a better candidate than I thought (not too hard really ... my opinion of him was fairly low ... mostly by comparison with several other GOP hopefuls I preferred).

He should have something nice to say about her this week. I think her support really helped him be accepted by many conservatives.

Phyllis bravely bucked the tide of radical feminism throughout the '70s, '80s, '90s, '00's and TEENS to see the tide turning toward the pro-life side and many abortion clinics throughout America closing their doors. May she rest in peace.

The Advocate recently named her among “The 50 Biggest Homophobes of the Last 50 Years," because of her extreme (some might say warped) views on homosexuality.

Her lawyer son John, as you may know, is gay.

I hope she passed away without regrets.

She could have spent her life in ease and luxury, but she was a true believer in what she believed, and had pretty good rationale for thinking what she thought. She spent a lot of her own money and an immense amount of time and effort upholding what she believed in.
She was Catholic and very devoted to the Church. She was rather on the traditional order, and some might have a problem with that. But she was orthodox and sincere.

I say she was one of the more noble souls of our time.

Sincere and noble? Up to a point. She was not against approving dirty political tricks such as voter suppression:

From:
Glenn Grothman Joins Other Republicans In Admitting Voter ID Laws Are About Suppressing Democratic Voters

Eagle Forum founder Phyllis Schlafly cheered on another way the GOP has tried to suppress the vote: by reducing voting hours.

Schlafly said in 2014 that Republican lawmakers must restrict early voting opportunities because high voter turnout helps Democrats:

"Democrats promote early voting for the same reason they oppose voter ID: because they view early voting as helping their side. In the absurdly long 35-day period of early voting in Ohio in 2012, Democrats racked up perhaps a million-vote advantage over Republicans before Election Day was ever reached. Republicans have been slow to realize how early voting helps the Democrats."

Requiring an ID to vote is no more voter suppression than requiring an ID to by alcohol is reenacting Prohibition.

Well she certainly wasn't a force for good. She played a big role in stopping the Equal Rights Amendment from being passed. One of the notable things about this is that it would have eliminated the male-only draft and made it more likely that women would be subjected to conscription, yet nowadays it's not uncommon to find reactionaries citing the male-only draft as proof that feminists don't actually want equality. In fact it would have dealt with a lot of cases where women seem to have the upper hand. I find it amusing that all of these inequalities are the result of right-wing activists (particularly Schafly), and not the fault of left-wing feminists.

Her legacy is basically one of homophobia, sexism and nativism.

Phyllis Schlafly was a notable woman. In fact, it's no exaggeration to say that she was the most talented grassroots organizer of the last half of the 20th century. Think about it. She single-handedly defeated the ERA in the 1970s when it was surely on a fast track toward becoming a part of the US Constitution. She presciently warned that passage of the ERA would lead to women in combat and homosexuals being granted marriage rights...which happened anyway. So what happened? She "won" the battle but lost the war. So her efforts on this regard must ultimately be judged to have failed. Why? In my opinion, her persistent loyalty, and that of people like her, to the Republican party. She remained faithful to the GOP despite its repeated betrayals of Catholic ethnics like her. When she wrote "A Choice, Not an Echo" back in 1964 she raised themes (people vs elites) that resonate strongly today in the Trump campaign. She was never able to surmount loyalty to party. Which is too bad, because she was an enormously talented Catholic.

May she rest in peace.

You won, so why the bellyaching? Everything she warned would come to pass with the ERA has come to pass without it. Everything except conscription of women, which I have absolutely no doubt will occur should the draft come back.

Calling someone a "Homophobe", whatever that means, is today the equivalent to calling someone a witch in the Middle Ages.

And it is too bad that the brain dead Cable / Local TV Media is unable to cover the death of an independent thinking, thoughtful intelligent woman, a lawyer and Phi Beta Kappa and Radcliffe College graduate, who came from a relatively humble background, even if you strongly disagree with her Conservative politics, could serve as a role model to young people today.

But they can spend hours and hours covering the deaths of celebrities like Prince and Gene Wilder.

A little balance is in order.

This woman stood for what was right. I don’t even like the word “conservative.” It’s too political. She was, without getting into all of the political names, a woman who stood for what was true, right, and decent. The comments against her give me a headache.
She was NOT a “homophobe.” “Homophobe” isn’t even a real word, it is just a ridiculous catch phrase that I’m sick to death of. It has been coined by a terribly immature, intolerant, obnoxious group of people who have no respect at all for another’s beliefs. When they cry “intolerant!”, they should hold a mirror. They can’t think outside of their little politically “correct” bubble, and don’t take anything seriously. A phobia is defined as a psychological fear of something, not a belief or disbelief in something. A phobia is a fear of spiders, heights, etc., not the belief that certain things are just wrong.
She was NOT a “sexist.” She believed in women and men as complementary to eachother, not in competition. Think Adam and Eve. The “sexist” comment comes from the malicious resentment to her being against the murder of undeserving children inside the womb.
She was a breath of fresh air, a whiff of perfume, as far as I’m concerned, freshening the suffocation of the praising of abortion, the obsession with all forms of sex to the most disgusting extreme, and the hatred of anything natural and right.
Too bad SHE couldn’t have been the “first female president”. At least SHE would have stood for something good for a change.

Thanks for that info. I just googled it up, that's pretty bad.

This opinion piece by her is also not pretty:
History shows Joe Mccarthy's reputation is undeserved

As a last thought, this thread was supposed to be devoted to Phyllis Schlafly's memory, and now already it's been ruined. The woman is dead. She was a very good figure. Leave her alone. She wouldn't care anyhow.

Would people have the same reaction that you endorse if for example, instead of a prominent and polarizing conservative figure, President Obama had died (hypothetical scenario, thank God)? Of course not. Perhaps not you, but people here would trample all over his grave.

Compared to that, I think this thread has been quite mild.

It is a shame that after someone dies some folks find that the time to make snarky remarks. Perhaps they were never taught that at times like that, if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. But some folks feel like they have to weigh in on every subject whether it is socially acceptable or not.

Totally agree.

I was taught, you shouldn't criticize someone who's deceased, because they can't tell their side of the story.

Looking at some interviews she did, it seems that she never opposed "equal rights" for women or said that women should be stay-at-home spouses, but opposed the ERA on the grounds that women generally already had equal rights (under the Equal Protection clause) and that the ERA would eliminate the male-only draft.

I think so, too.

The male-only draft was legal in the Vietnam era because a lot of jobs in the military were male-only.

Since today most jobs in the military are open to women, somebody could probably challenge the necessity of a male-only draft.

Let's put it this way, HERE AT CAF, the accusation that CAF members would not offer prayers for Obama should he die is speculation. The attacks on Phyllis Schlafly's character and work upon her death are fact.

Not speaking for the general public, just those who are posting here on CAF.

Regrets? Sounds like she had a wonderful relationship with her son.

http://articles.latimes.com/1992-09-...yllis-schlafly

A son of conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly has publicly revealed that he is homosexual, while at the same time defending his mother's political views and the Republican Party's "family values" campaign theme.

"The family values movement is not anti-gay," said John F. Schlafly, a 41-year-old attorney who lives with his parents in Alton, Ill., and counts among his clients the Eagle Forum, the conservative group founded by his mother.

"These people are not anti-gay. They're not gay bashers," John Schlafly said in a telephone interview Friday. "I hold my mother in very high esteem. She's doing good work."

He added that he "didn't agree with everything" he heard at the GOP convention but insisted that "efforts to convey the (Republican) Convention and the platform and speakers as bigots and gay bashers is completely inaccurate. The concept of family values should not be threatening to gays and lesbians. Most gays and lesbians have good relations with their family, as I do."

I think it all goes back to the prevailing thought among liberals that Republicans and/or conservatives are evil and hateful people. The Democrat party and MSM has done a phenomenal job of instilling this idea into folks heads.

Yes, aren't we awful for wanting to preserve the life and dignity of all humankind?

No use. DaddyGirl is the typical modern leftist.

In fact it would have dealt with a lot of cases where women seem to have the upper hand. Her legacy is basically one of homophobia, sexism and nativism.
It's interesting that you use the term "reactionaries." How are "all of these inequalities" the result of right-wing activists? Are you talking about the draft?

It seems like you read some leftist site picking up on those who want women in the draft, call them "reactionaries", and lazily believe that they're representative of right-wing activists.

As an ex-liberal I will say your post is a mess with its thinking.

I don't understand why people are getting so offended at criticism of her. She was a prominent public conservative figure who devoted her life to political activism. Her life had a profound impact on other people and I don't think she's above criticism. I don't see anybody saying she deserved to die. I can't comment on her as a wife or mother, and I never knew her personally, but I can certainly comment on her political activism.

Yet she did all she could to make it harder for women to have lives outside of being stay-at-home wives, and pretty clearly expressed the view that this was the role women should have in society. Sometimes she tried to skew this into an issue of allowing women the freedom to be stay-at-home wives (as if anyone was trying to prevent them from doing so), but I think when she said this kind of stuff it was very transparent.

My comment definitely at least needs to be reworded. I used some misleading language at points I think.

My point wasn't really aimed at those who want women to register for the draft. I also wasn't arguing against those who want to exclude women from having to register for the draft. I oppose the draft in its entirety. It's just a somewhat common criticism from right-wing anti-feminists that the lack of a push for women to be included in registering for the draft is evidence of the fact that feminists are not interested in establishing equality between men and women, and I find it amusing that one of the main opponents to one of the biggest moves towards eliminating the male-only draft was a right-wing anti-feminist.

Of course in actuality nobody should have to register for the draft.

Well, you are on a Catholic Forum. Our faith teaches us to pray for the dead. We do not attack the character of a person, especially those no longer with us, out of respect.

Probably the below was the most offensive:

Vilifying people who fight immorality. What do you call people who believe in celibacy outside of marriage, heterophobes?

Precisely. As to her role as public figure, scrutiny of her record should not cease to continue just 'out of respect for the dead'.

Wow.

That's quite a statement given, for example, the vile, viscious and untrue attacks on the character of President Obama over the years at CAF. Not that Obama is above criticism -- he isn't -- but I haven't seen much respect here among his opponents.

What do you mean by "equal"? Physically, men and women have very different capabilities. When it comes to intelligence, some research indicates that men have a flatter IQ bell curve than women.

Furthermore. given the illogical Progressive view on rights, it is just as well that the amendment was defeated. It would probably have been used to infringe on my freedom of association, weaken due process standards, and extract money from me to pay for various handouts for women.

I support equal rights for women, as the rest of you do.

But, we already had the Equal Protection Clause in the Constitution. Women already generally had equal rights. The concern was about laws that provide special protections to women.

Another poster mentioned the draft. If the draft were reinstated, the ERA presumably would require that women could be drafted, and possibly also being forced into combat positions. I support a volunteer military anyway, so I would want to see as few people as possible subject to the draft.

Also, before 1983 Social Security was not gender-neutral; the rules were more lenient for women regarding spousal and survivor's benefits. I can see someone being concerned about that; I can see concerns about someone like my grandaunt, who never worked outside the home and who lived in a different time, really needing those benefits.

So, I can see where someone would have been coming from in the 1970s.

They are not "rewriting" the Bible.

Jesus did not speak English. The English language was not even invented until around 700AD. Jesus did not actually write anything. He could have if he chose to. Jesus is God. But Jesus spoke in Aramaic/Hebrew. Everything in the Bible is a translation.

Scholars are constantly studying the Hebrew and Greek texts and trying to retranslate. Some things just don't translate well.

Back in the day, early scholars wrote in Latin and Greek.

The Navarre Bible is considered by some to be the best so far.

The Early Church fathers wrote extensively as did the 33 Doctors of the Church.

People tend to confuse equality with sameness. We are all equal in the eyes of God, but each with different qualities and talents. Women can have babies, men can't. Does that make men lesser than women?
Quote:
Brothers and sisters:
As a body is one though it has many parts,
and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body,
so also Christ.
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one Body,
whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons,
and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.

Now the body is not a single part, but many.

Now you are Christ’s Body, and individually parts of it.
Some people God has designated in the Church
to be, first, Apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers;
then, mighty deeds;
then gifts of healing, assistance, administration,
and varieties of tongues.
Are all Apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers?
Do all work mighty deeds? Do all have gifts of healing?
Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?
Strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts.

O Star of the Sea, help us, and show us that you are our Mother.

O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and earth, we humbly ask you from the depths of our heart to help us in this necessity. There are none who can withstand your power.
O show us that you are our Mother.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. Sweet Mother, we place this cause in your hands. Amen.
